My 6 Most Popular Articles of 2023
Over six months, what articles did you read & share the most?
2023 was a big year for me. And I am incredibly thankful for your support.
A new community
I launched David Rogers on Digital in July. In less than 6 months, we grew our community to nearly 9,000 subscribers.
By year end, I had published 22 articles. And those sparked countless comments, questions, and debates—both in Substack and on LinkedIn.
A new book
The year was also notable for the launch of my latest book—The Digital Transformation Roadmap—which published in the US in September and worldwide in October.
Your support made it the #1 new book on organizational change on Amazon.com.
Thank you so much!!
Many of you joined the masterclass I offered those who pre-ordered the book. Businesses placed bulk orders for hundreds and even thousands of their employees.
With your encouragement, I recorded the audiobook myself. And I traveled to Europe, Latin America, and Asia to deliver keynotes on the book.
Best of all…
The ideas of the book struck a chord and were discussed and debated in in over 60 media outlets, including:
(Global publications) MIT Sloan Management Review, The New York Times, Financial Times, Forbes, Business Insider, Fast Company…
(Regional highlights) Les Echos, Nordic Business Report, The Irish Times, Australian Financial Review, Vietnam Economic Times, Modern Ghana, The Guam Daily Post…
(Industry verticals) CIO.com, Green Book, Supply Chain Brain, Management Today…
(Podcasts & radio) Better Innovation, Coaching for Leaders, The CX Punk Podcast, The Wharton School on Sirius XM, Lancefield on the Line…
…and dozens more outlets.
(Huge thanks to Terri Vanech and Robyn Massey for their press support!)
What struck a chord?
Before we turn the page to 2024, I wanted to take a look back at the articles from David Rogers on Digital that resonated most with YOU in 2023.
Below are the most read articles from our first six months of publishing. I’ve listed them in reverse order—as a countdown to number one.
Drumroll please…
THE SIX MOST POPULAR ARTICLES OF 2023
#6
Digital Leadership in Action, Part 1
I shared the audio and a transcript of my interview with Ann Greenhalgh on the Wharton School’s “Leadership in Action” program on Sirius XM radio.
We had a great, wide-ranging conversation on why digital transformation is a continuous journey, the cautionary tale of CNN's failed digital efforts, organizational complexity as a barrier to change, and why even digital-native companies are looking for new models of leadership to keep up with digital acceleration.
#5
What Is Digital Transformation?
One of my first articles for David Rogers on Digital. My attempt to define “digital transformation” a decade after I started writing about it.
#4
Are You REALLY Doing Digital Transformation?
How do you know if you are really doing digital transformation?
I set out to spot the telltale signs of when a company thinks it is doing DX, but it is really just executing a series of technology projects, without any transformation of the business.
The article is written in the form of 10 questions to contemplate for your own business.
Are you doing digital transformation? Or digital business-as-usual?
#3
8 Strategy Tools from “The DX Roadmap”
This was an introduction to the 8 strategy tools from the pages of The Digital Transformation Roadmap.
They include the Problem / Opportunity Matrix, the Shared Vision Map, the Rogers Growth Navigator, and more.
As I explain, these tools do not offer the answers to digital transformation. Instead, they are designed to pose the crucial questions that will guide you to the right answers for your particular organization.
Each tool is designed to work at every level of the organization—whether you are a CEO, directing digital for a business unit, leading a function like Marketing, or part of a team designing a new digital product. I hope you find them helpful!
#2
ChatGPT is Not a Strategy
My final post of the year.
I had many conversations in 2023 that started with a leader’s request to discuss their “AI strategy” or their “ChatGPT strategy.”
In the article, I describe how new technologies risk distracting us from questions of strategy.
Yes, Generative AI demands our attention. But as we begin to experiment with it, we must remember to “fall in love with the problem, not the solution.”
I offer five simple steps that I see smart organizations following as they begin to experiment with GenAI in their business. And I identify the essential ingredients to any corporate GenAI program. (Hint: a large budget is not among them.)
#1
The DX Roadmap: A Brief Introduction
My most read article of 2023.
I introduce the overarching framework of my new book, which distills the lessons of the corporate outliers (Walmart, Disney, Air Liquide, Mastercard, Acuity Insurance, The New York Times) who are generating lasting business results from their digital transformation efforts.
What sets them apart from the majority of companies whose DX programs are failing?
They each manage to do five things to transform their business. I distill these as the five steps of the “DX Roadmap.”
If you haven’t read the book yet, this article gives you a quick primer on the ideas at its heart.
Honorable Mention
Let me call out three other articles of note from 2023, that were not quite as well read, but sparked great feedback and discussion.
Be sure you don’t miss …
And just for fun…
My most viewed post on LinkedIn this year (watched a whopping 37,000 times!).
